TVA Update, Lake Levels

-Kayleigh Heaton
Government & Community Relations Specialist

As drought conditions persist across the TVA region, interest in lake levels and related conditions remain high. Today, while there is notna significant change in conditions, I want to ensure you have the latest information available for your area.

Recent rainfall has provided some short-term local relief; however, it has not produced meaningful runoff into streams or reservoirs. Runoff across portions of the eastern Valley remains among the lowest on record, and overall system conditions continue to reflect persistent drought. The latest version of the U.S. Drought Monitor (June 18, 2026) shows the majority of the Tennessee River watershed in some degree of drought.

  • 27% of the Valley region is in at least Severe Drought
  • 13% of the Valley region is in Extreme Drought.
  • Calendar-year-to-date rainfall is 86% of normal.
  • Runoff is 51% of normal in the Tennessee Valley.

TVA’s River Management team continues to closely monitor these conditions and operate the system strategically to balance multiple regional needs—including water supply, water quality, recreation, navigation, and power generation. As water levels fluctuate through the summer, impacts will vary by reservoir, and we will continue providing regular updates as new information becomes available. The most impacted reservoirs are included below, with some locations experiencing the lowest water levels they have seen in many decades.

As drought conditions persist and reservoir levels remain lower than normal, we also want to emphasize water safety for residents and recreational users. Lower lake levels can expose rocks, debris, and shallow areas that are typically underwater, creating new or unexpected hazards for boaters and swimmers. Please let us know if we can help support any efforts by your office to remind the public to use caution, stay aware of rapidly changing conditions, and follow posted guidance when out on the water. These simple precautions can help reduce risks and ensure safe recreation throughout the summer.

TVA is regularly updating information on drought conditions and reservoir impacts online: Drought Conditions and Reservoir Impacts. We also encourage everyone to follow TVA on social media channels; information can be found online here. Thank you again for your partnership with TVA, and please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns from your constituents.
