City of Young Harris Water Meters -- Things to know:

In 2024, The City of Young Harris installed new water meters for all customers. These new meters have the capacity to read water usage and leaks in real time. Some things to know:

  • Do not touch or try to go into the meter. Do not lift the lid on the meter box. If you try to go into the meter, you could damage it. If you damage it, you will be responsible for the cost of the replacement, including a new meter.
  • Cutoff Valves – please make sure you have a cutoff value on your side of the meter. If you have a leak or problem at your property, it is your responsibility to have a way to turn off the water. If you have a leak or problem, make the city aware. Then it is your responsibility to call a plumber to check on the leak on your side (customer side) of the meter.
  • The City of Young Harris is responsible for problems at the meter or in the city’s distribution lines. The city is not responsible for issues on the customer side of the meter.
  • Pressure Reducing Valve (PRV) – It is your responsibility to have a PRV installed on your property. Please remember that these will wear out or go bad after years of wear and tear. It is your responsibility to replace that PRV.

Thank you for your patience in 2024 as we worked to get these new meters installed. If you have questions, please give us a call at 706-379-3171.

If a BOIL WATER ADVISORY is shared, please do the following:

In order to protect the public from a potential health hazard, customers that have experienced water outages and/or low water pressure are advised to use only boiled tap water or bottled water for drinking, cooking, or preparing food.

To properly boil tap water for use, customers should:

• Heat water until bubbles come quickly from the bottom of the container;

•Continue heating the water for one minute once it begins to boil;

•Remove the water from the heat source and allow to cool before use.

During a Boil Water Advisory, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that boiled lap water or bottled water be used for the following:

•Drinking

•Brushing teeth

• Washing food and preparing food and baby formula

•Making ice

•Drinking water for pets

Other activities such as clothes washing, dish washing and other uses can be done without boiling tap water, if done properly. The complete CDC guidance can be found at this website: https://www.cdc.gov/water-emergency/about/drinking-water-advisories-an-…
